Gorilla Grip, also known as Gorilla Grip Coochie, is a slang expression used to describe the relative "tightness" or strength with which a woman can clench their vagin* during intercourse. The phrase grew in popularity on social media during in 2020, becoming a trend on TikTok shortly after, where TikTokers on GripTok, a subculture of the social media site dedicated to Kegel exercises that strengthen the pelvic area, perform Kegels to the beat of various songs. The terms "Grip" and "Grippy" without the "gorilla" description, as well as the phrases "I Know It Grips" and "Grip Reaper," also became popularized as slang terms on TikTok in the early 2020s. Additionally, the slang is notably associated with I Know It's Pink and Chicago Grip Reaper memes and comments on social media.

Origin

The use of the word "grip" in relation to the words "coochie," "puss*," "bussy," etc. has been prevalent across the internet for most of the 2010s. However, on March 28th, 2019, Twitter ^[1] user @scifibritt tweeted the first viral iteration of the phrase "gorilla grip coochie." In response to a tweet about skincare, they wrote, "gorilla grip coochie, too" (shown below).

Spread

Months later, on December 29th, 2019, Redditor Pr0Rapture shared a Facebook meme in the /r/BrandNewSentence^[2] subreddit. It reads, "Sex Tip: Put a little pepper on her pillow so when you put her face in it she sneezes & her coochie girl you like a gorilla fist." The post received more than 29,000 points (94% upvoted) and 245 comments in less than two years (shown below, left).

While there are several variations of the term on Urban Dictionary, ^[3] the definition that relates most to this usage of the phrase was posted by Busted cooter on July 4th, 2020. They wrote, "When the monkey is so tight when you try to pull out you can feel it sucking your dick Back in like a plunger" (shown below, right).

On August 13th, 2020, rapper Sinoda posted the song "Gorilla Grip" on YouTube. In the song, he raps, "No lip, with some change and gorilla grip / Pop that sh*t like aye, aye, aye, ok." The post received more than 480,000 views in less than one year (shown below).

GripTok

In 2020, Kegel exercises became a popular topic on TikTok, where users would share tips for performing pelvic exercises with the goal of reaching a "gorilla grip" vagin*. Within one year, the hashtag #griptok^[4] has more than 50 million views (example below, left). Other videos feature TikTokers performing Kegel exercises to the beat of a song (example below, right). Many of these videos feature the emojis copypasta ⭕️💢⭕️💢, which is a visual signifier for Kegels.

Criticism

On March 31st, 2021, Mashable ^[5] covered the trend and criticized the necessity for exercises such as these. They indicate that these exercises enforce cultural stereotypes about female sexuality that do not actually result in positive health. In the article, obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Jennifer Lincoln said, "Being 'tight' is really a placeholder for saying society values young virginal women and having sex therefore makes you dirty and loose. All of this nonsense belongs in the garbage."

I Know It's Pink / Teen Sexual Harassment

I Know It's Pink, also known as I Bet It's Bubblegum Pink, refers to the widespread phenomenon of TikTok users (often teens) using variations of the phrase "I know it's pink," "it's grippy" or a hex code for a shade of pink known as #FF94A4 when commenting on a TikTok of an attractive girl or woman. Such "pink" comments have existed on TikTok since at least early 2021, with others like the Grip Reaper meme existing since 2022 and TikTok hornyposting memes such as Ichigo scream as related trends that took off in late 2022. The rise of such comments led to various discussions in early 2023 about the nature of "internet compliments" and how they tend to veer overtly sexual to the point of Teen Sexual Harassment in certain Gen Z internet circles.

⭕️💢⭕️💢 / Contraction Emojis

⭕️💢⭕️💢, also known as Contraction Emojis, is a pattern of Emojis used to visually represent contractions, often specifically referring to vagin*l contractions, kegel exercises and anal contractions. The pattern first became popularized in this context on Twitter in June 2020 and became increasingly popular over the following years, often in sexual jokes. The pattern also became popular on TikTok, inspiring the "💢⭕️ Reps Challenge," where women do kegel exercises to the beat of a given song.

Chicago Grip Reaper

Grip Reaper, also known as Chiraq Grip Reaper or Chicago Grip Reaper, is a catchphrase used by people to refer to a video featuring former Vine star ChloeLMAO, whose real name is Chloe Woodward. The video features a blonde Chloe wearing headphones and seated on a stoop as they deliver a quirky monologue that ends with "Just kidding! I live in the old city of Chicago [incomprehensible noises]." In 2022, internet users parodied the moniker "Chiraq Grim Reaper," used to describe late Chicago rapper "Lil Reese," and used it to express their amusem*nt at Chloe's quirked up personality and expressing their attraction to Chloe.
